Q: What is your favorite thing about your culture you wish to share?

A: My family is from Charleston, South Carolina, and are considered Gullah/Geechee. Gullah people are descendants of enslaved Africans from several tribal groups of west and central Africa that were able to preserve certain aspects of their culture, such as food, arts, and dialect. While there are many things I love and admire about my culture, I’d have to say that my favorite is the food and the many innovative dishes that are Gullah/Geechee in origin. There’s nothing like a bowl of okra gumbo over rice on a cold day or some Hoppin’ John to bring in the new year!

Q: What is some advice you got early in your career that you found especially helpful as you progressed?

A: “You earned your seat at the table through skills, hard work, and being yourself. Don’t let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong.”
