Every now and then I come across project managers who seem to have forgotten the “cardinal rules” of project management.  When I come across such a project manager, I have the strongest desire to help them in a jovial way and to make it memorable.  That’s when I channel my inner David Letterman and pull out my “Top 10 List”.  While David’s “Top 10 List” was originally used as a form of mockery, I’ve adapted the list to be more educational.

Check out my top 10 list for project managers:

#1 Clearly define the project goals and objectives in the Project Charter upon initiation of the project.

#2 Know your Project Stakeholders to align expectations and keep them engaged always.

#3 Communicate, Communicate, Communicate…early and often.

#4 Get organized, stay focused on the big picture and prioritize.

#5 Plan the work proactively; Work the plan but be flexible.

#6 Know your team and leverage their strengths.

#7 Be aware of constraints, risks, and issues.

#8 Celebrate the milestones.

#9 Use the Project Management methods, standards, and templates.

#10 When in doubt…ask your Project Manager peers.
